The Antonov An-225 Mriya, meaning "dream" or "inspiration" in Ukrainian, was a strategic cargo aircraft designed and manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Its development began in 1984 based on the Soviet government's requirement for a large cargo aircraft to replace the Myasishchev VM-T. The An-225 was originally developed as an enlarged version of the Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft, with the aim of carrying the Buran space shuttles. On 21 December 1988, the An-225 made its maiden flight. Only one was completed, although a second fuselage with a slightly different configuration was partially built. After a brief period of use in the Soviet space program, the aircraft was retired in the early 1990s. Towards the turn of the century, it was decided to refurbish the An-225 and put it back into service to carry oversized cargo for Antonov Airlines. The aircraft had a maximum take-off weight of 640 tonnes and held several records, including the heaviest aircraft ever built and the largest wingspan of any aircraft in service. It was commonly used to transport objects that were considered impossible to transport by air, such as 130-ton generators, wind turbine blades and diesel locomotives. The An-225 attracted much public attention due to its size and uniqueness. Unfortunately, the only completed An-225 was destroyed during the Battle of Antonov Airfield during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. On 20 May 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to complete a second An-225 to replace the destroyed aircraft.
